The Appleby Horse Fair is an annual event that takes place in Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, in the north of England. It is one of the largest and most famous gatherings of Gypsies, Travellers, and Romani people in Europe. The fair has been held for centuries, dating back to the 17th century, and is traditionally centered around the buying and selling of horses, as well as a celebration of Romani culture. People from the Gypsy, Traveller and Romani communities gather not just for business but also to meet with friends and family, share news, and celebrate their cultural heritage. It's an important social event for the community, and it attracts visitors from all over the UK and beyond.
Many Gypsies travel in their traditional bowtop wagons to and from the Fair. 'We are from Skipton and every year we travel to the fair in our bowtop, it is our two-week holiday,' Lisa says.
